Welcome to the Broken Sound Podcast.  It's bit of a chance for us to doth our caps to the artists and labels who've been keeping our ears happy.  Every so often we'll be playing out our favourite tracks, and inviting our favourite artists to perform exclusive live sets from our living room...

This month, we're absolutely made up to have had The Mariner's Children and This Is The Kit join us to play out two stunning live sets.

Currently residing in Paris, but having spent much time crafting their sound in Bristol- This Is The Kit have been a favourite of ours since the day Broken Sound was born. Some of you may know of them from our Sunday Kickback night last year, many more from their incredible album Krulle Bol which was featured in many of the obligatory "Album Of The Year" lists at the end of 2008. And rightly so. Produced by John Parish (PJ Harvey/Sparklehorse), and recorded in less than 3 days in Italy, the album is an absolutely flawless display of raw, honest music. Stripped back without being obvious.

Released through French indie Microbe, it's an essential addition to anyone's collection. Be sure to also keep an ear out for Kate's side project "Whalebone Polly", having teamed up with another favourite of ours - Rachael Dadd. An EP is due out in September, and it's a thing of absolute beauty. Kate joined us to play Birchwood Beaker (recently released on split 7" with Soy Un Caballo), Easy Pickings, Moon and White Ash Cut (released on Tape Club Records) and we couldn't be happier...

Folk newcomers The Mariner's Children have firmly stamped their name onto the scene in no time at all. Proof if ever it was needed that music this special speaks for itself. And in this case, it speaks with one of the most stunning voices to have graced our ears. Lyrically perfect, their songs are stories - sometimes dark, sometimes lost, but never angst-ridden or hopeless - and never giving too much away. Songs drift from beautiful, sparse understatement to stomping, feverish intensity without warning.

For this, and more reasons than we could ever list here, it was an absolute joy to have The Mariner's Children record 2 live tracks in our living room - Back I Beat The Waves and Coal. Amongst other dates, they'll be playing at this year's Bloom Festival and at the BBC Electric Proms. Be sure to catch them live whenever you get the opportunity, it's something very special indeed...
